Staring into the barrel of a long distance breakup

A mannequin head on a rusted old car being reclaimed by the forest reminded me of a $70 phone bill nearly half a century ago.

Her name was Robyn, with a “y.” My first girlfriend, if you don't count Naomi in kindergarten or Karen in first grade. Or the girl I met right after high school graduation, who I dumped after a week for Robyn.

We saw each other every day for a couple of weeks. I wrote her every day I was gone on a month long graduation road trip with my buddies. We saw each other every day when I came back.

I called her every day from college. We were at opposite ends of the state. After a while, she seemed different. And distant.

We broke up long distance after I’d already racked up a $70 phone bill.

At the time it seemed like a big deal. I never got my varsity jacket back, or my class ring. That was a big deal, too.

Love sometimes happens at inconvenient times. But that's no reason not to go to college.
